Daschle Heads Senate Delegation to Africa; Will Visit Children’s AIDS Clinic
Sen. Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) and three other senators arrived yesterday in Africa for a 10-day fact-finding mission that will examine challenges facing the continent's development, including the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the South African Press Association reports. The delegation, which includes Sens. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.), will visit South Africa, Kenya, Botswana and Nigeria to meet with leaders in government and business (South African Press Association, 8/22). The delegation will also be making a stop at a project run by Hope Worldwide, a not-for-profit faith-based group that focuses on helping children affected by HIV/AIDS. The senators are expected to return to the United States on Sept. 1 (Heather Schomann, Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 8/22).
