HIV/AIDS Awareness, Funding ‘Essential,’ Editorial Says
Participation levels in Colorado's largest AIDS fundraiser dropped sharply this year, but anti-AIDS activism is needed now more than ever, a Denver Post editorial states. The editorial notes that participation was 37% lower this year for AIDS Walk Colorado and that the low turnout means that AIDS organizations will have less money to provide services. "It's unfortunate that even with the release of a recent United Nations global report on the disease that shows it is on the rise and is ravaging some communities, support to bring about awareness continues to drop off," the editorial says. Noting that there is still no cure for HIV and that antiretroviral drugs do not stop the spread of the virus, the Post says that funding for prevention efforts and long-term care are "essential." The editorial states, "Now is not the time to rest. ... The fact that many Americans are now living longer with AIDS underscores the need for more support, activism and funding to provide extended medical care" (Denver Post, 8/27).
