Boston Herald Profiles First Lisa Lopes AIDS Scholarship Recipient
The Boston Herald on Monday profiled Ineudira Barbosa, the first recipient of the Lisa Lopes AIDS Scholarship, named in memory of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes of the R&B group TLC. Barbosa earned the $25,000 scholarship for her work with Teens for Education, Advocacy and Leadership in Cambridge, Mass., where she helps to educate peers about sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases, birth control, pregnancy and other sexual health issues (Nissman, Boston Herald, 12/9). Barbosa was selected to receive the scholarship from among more than 20,000 applicants by health experts from the Kaiser Family Foundation, AIDS Action, SIECUS, Advocates for Youth and LIFEbeat, as well as the remaining members of TLC and MTV executives. The winner of the scholarship, sponsored by LIFEbeat and MTV as part of its "Fight for Your Rights: Protect Yourself" campaign, was announced in conjunction with World AIDS Day 2002 (MTV.com, 12/10).
