Caribbean AIDS Conference To Be Held in Dominican Republic in March 2004
The University of Puerto Rico's Medical Sciences Campus, the Caribbean Community and the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre in collaboration with the NIH Office of AIDS Research on Saturday announced plans to hold a three-day conference on AIDS in the Caribbean in March 2004 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the BBC/Caribbean Media Corporation reports. The conference, titled "A Multicultural Caribbean United Against HIV/AIDS," will bring together nearly 1,500 delegates, including AIDS researchers and health care providers from the English, Dutch, French and Spanish-speaking Caribbean region and will take place March 5-7, 2004. The delegates will work to enhance the region's efforts to work collectively on HIV prevention and treatment programs designed to "mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on health, social and economic status," according to the BBC/Caribbean Media Corporation. The conference will also seek to develop the capacity of the region to perform scientific research on HIV/AIDS (BBC/Caribbean Media Corporation, 8/17). The Caribbean has the highest HIV prevalence after sub-Saharan Africa (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 7/8).
