Getty To Use ‘Visual Image’ To Fight AIDS, Columnist Says
The Seattle-based "photojournalism giant" Getty Images has announced a partnership with the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS to "bring a formidable dog to the fight [against HIV/AIDS]: the visual image," Nicole Brodeur writes in her Seattle Times column. The company plans to send award-winning photographer Brent Stirton to South Africa to document AIDS programs run by DaimlerChrysler and DeBeers, Brodeur says. In addition, Getty photographers will try to document the epidemic in their daily news coverage and will develop an advertising campaign for GBC. "We wanted the business to be about more than profit. At the end of the day, I see business as a much more powerful means to effect change," Getty CEO Jonathan Klein said, adding that the company makes a "product that has the ability to change people's perceptions and motivate them to act" (Brodeur, Seattle Times, 4/1).
