New York City To Offer Free HIV Testing to Homeless Men, Mayor Bloomberg Announces
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R) on Wednesday announced that the city this week will begin offering rapid HIV tests at no cost to single adult men entering homeless shelters, the New York Times reports. If the men test HIV-positive, they will be offered medical referrals (Kaufman, New York Times, 9/23). The city will begin offering the tests this week in an effort to identify the estimated one in four New York residents who are unaware they are HIV-positive, city Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden said (New York Post, 9/23). The tests provide results in one hour, and the city may offer the tests to women in the future, according to the AP/1010Wins.com (Weissenstein, AP/1010Wins.com, 9/22).
