HHS Awards $10.4M To Support HIV/AIDS Research on Three Continents
HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson on Thursday announced four new grants totaling $10.4 million to support HIV/AIDS research in Cambodia, Peru, Russia and Thailand, four countries "hard hit" by the disease, according to an HHS release. The grants were awarded through the Comprehensive International Program of Research on AIDS, which is administered by the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases. NIAID Director Anthony Fauci said, "In many countries with high rates of HIV/AIDS, the baseline clinical data and research infrastructure needed to accurately characterize the epidemic are lacking," adding, "We hope that research conducted under the auspices of CIPRA will form a foundation for successful clinical trials of treatments and vaccines needed in the battle against HIV/AIDS" (HHS release, 11/18).
