Christian Science Monitor Examines NGOs’ HIV/AIDS Education Efforts in Pakistani Religious Schools
The Christian Science Monitor on Wednesday examined nongovernmental organizations' efforts to teach HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention in Pakistan's network of religious schools, known as madrassahs. NGOs have been educating clerics and students in madrassahs in an effort to eliminate the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS and teach people that the disease is not confined only to injection drug users, commercial sex workers and men who have sex with men. Project officials hope that their work in the madrassah network -- which thus far has been successful, although "limited by an aversion to sex education" -- might prove to be a model for other countries in the Muslim world to raise HIV/AIDS awareness, according to the Monitor (Tohid, Christian Science Monitor, 12/8).
