Reuters Profiles HIV-Positive South African Supreme Court Judge Edwin Cameron
Reuters on Monday profiled Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa Judge Edwin Cameron, the only senior government official in the country to publicly disclose his HIV-positive status. Cameron, a former human rights lawyer, is "[w]hite, wealthy and proudly gay," which is "hardly a typical face of the AIDS pandemic ravaging Southern Africa," according to Reuters. In his new book, titled "Witness to AIDS," Cameron criticizes Western pharmaceutical companies for keeping antiretroviral drugs "out of reach of most Africans for far too long" and South African leaders for not addressing "the debacle," according to Reuters (Quinn, Reuters, 5/2). The complete article is available online.
