HIV/AIDS Advocates Begin ‘Campaign to End AIDS’ Walk in New York, Bound for Washington, D.C.
More than 300 advocates on Sunday walked through New York City to launch the Campaign To End AIDS walk, a march benefiting the national coalition formed in January to promote HIV research and prevention globally, the Long Island Newsday reports. About 60 of the advocates will walk 265 miles over the next three weeks through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and into Washington, D.C. (Harrell, Long Island Newsday, 10/16). When the marchers reach the district, they will join other HIV/AIDS advocates from all over the country for rallies in the city from Nov. 5-8. "It gives us a chance to spread the word in all kinds of cities and towns along the way," Charles King -- president of Housing Works, a New York City-based AIDS service organization that helped arrange the march -- said (Cave, New York Times, 10/16).
