World at Crucial Juncture in Fight Against HIV/AIDS, Researcher Says
"The HIV/AIDS Pandemic at 25 -- The Global Response," New England Journal of Medicine: Michael Merson, director of Yale University's Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS, chronicles the spread of HIV/AIDS around the world from 1981 through 2006 and the response of governments and international health organizations to the pandemic. Merson says the world in 2006 is "at a crossroads" in its response to the pandemic. He calls for further research on prevention methods, improved international coordination among governmental organizations and donors, and increased global funding to "strengthen fragile health care systems" and "build the comprehensive and sustainable response vital to ultimate control of this pandemic" (Merson, NEJM, 6/8).
