India Launches HIV/AIDS Awareness Campaign Aimed at Youth
India on Tuesday launched "Youth Unite for Victory on AIDS," a national HIV/AIDS awareness campaign aimed at youth, India's PTI/The Hindu reports. The project, which was launched by Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, is a collaborative effort between seven youth organizations and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It plans to send more than 20 million volunteers on buses to towns throughout India, according to PTI/The Hindu. The campaign began on Tuesday with a two-day conference that discussed YUVA's strategy and implementation. On Aug. 9, a second phase of the program will be launched at the state and district level, PTI/The Hindu reports. "Awareness and information are the keys to stopping the spread of AIDS," Shekhawat said, adding, "I am sure the campaign will make people aware about how to prevent the disease." A series of interactive HIV/AIDS quiz programs, which already have been airing on television and the Internet, also are part of the program (PTI/The Hindu, 6/27).
