Spain this year will allocate one million euros, or about $1.3 million, for research into the development of an HIV/AIDS vaccine as part of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said on Wednesday, Xinhuanet reports. The money primarily will go to laboratories in Kenya and Uganda. According to Xinhuanet, the fight against HIV/AIDS is Spain's No. 1 international priority, and the funding allocation marks the first time Spain has contributed one million euros to IAVI. The initiative has identified six potential HIV/AIDS vaccines and has begun trials in 11 countries, mostly in developing countries, Xinhuanet reports (Xinhuanet, 6/14).
